Scrumbling Workshops in Macarthur
As part of the Macarthur Textile Challenge and Expo 2011, the Macarthur Textile Network have secured Internationally recognised knitter and teacher Prudence Mapstone to run two Scrumbling Workshops.
Don’t know what Scrumbling is? Me neither and I am both a knitter and crocheter. I had to Google it, … what DID we do before Google? Apparently Scrumbling is the art of creative free-form crochet, according to James Walters and the late Sylvia Cosh who collaborated from the late 1970′s through to 2000, teaching and re-igniting the passion for crochet, knitting and textile art long before their recent renaissance in popular culture. Essentially, it is a make it up as you go along approach, randomly incorporating many different pieces, changing colours, textures, fibres and stitches often and joining them all together.
Prudence Mapstone, on her website, goes further incorporating knitted sections amongst the crochet in her Scrumbling objet d’art. Her What is Freeform page is a detailed step by step guide to total originality in your textile piece.
This looks like a heap of fun, but you must already know how to crochet or knit to participate.
The classes will be at the Camden Civic Centre on
- Friday 27th May from 12.30-3.30
- Saturday 28th May from 12.30-3.30
Cost is $50, places are limited to 20 per workshop, so don’t miss out.
To book phone 02 4626 4764 or email MacarthurTextileNetwork@gmail.com
I have attached a copy of the registration and payment form and we have some in-store.
Knitters Guild of NSW, Inc. – Southern Highlands Group
Check out the new Schedule of Events for 2011 for the Knitters Guild of NSW, Inc. – Southern Highlands Group, there is a new technique taught and often a guest speaker for each of the monthly meetings on the second Saturday of the month. Currently they are on a recruitment drive and have had quite a number of new members join in the last month.
Next month on the 9th of April, Sheila Beames will be discussing creative Afghans (using up all that left over stuff in the cupboard) and how to put together colours. She should know, with 30 years experience in costume design in the Sydney theatre and music scene, this is not to be missed. …. we all have leftovers in our stash, don’t miss it!
On the 4th of June, the Knitters Guild of NSW, Inc. – Southern Highlands Group will be hosting their Knitting Exhibition, with a special invitation for YOU to join them in celebrating 25 years of creativity in wool and knitting expertise. There will be Lace Knitting Exhibits, demonstrations and pattern advice.
There is also a knitted toy competition. Any colour, size or design qualifies as long as it is 100% hand knitted. There will be a prize awarded, so make sure you submit your entry toy by 11am. How easy is that? You can enter on the day, as you arrive!
See the 2011 Events calendar now.
Summer Stitching School in the Highlands
Great to see exciting new textile and stitching classes in the Highlands.
Highland Textiles have provided two very relevant courses for today’s “make-it-your-own” fashionista. Millinery with Waltraud Reiner and Beaded Encrustations with Fiona Hammond promise to enhance your skills with techniques and know-how you can use to create an outfit or design from scratch, or turn an off the peg piece into a memorable original.
The only problem is which one to do. With class dates running from 11th-14th of January, this is just what you need to hide from the summer heat. Why not make it a girlie outing and catch up with some friends, classes will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day. Morning, afternoon tea and a light sandwich lunch are included in the 4 day tuition price of $495.00. Participants can choose to purchase materials required or bring their own. You can enrol on their Facebook Event Page, contact them directly or you can pick up a form when you are next at Victoria House Needlecraft.
UnFinished Objects
Over and over again we have customers complaining about their UFO’s. The things that you have lost inspiration with, are frustrated with due to an error in printing or using a product you didn’t realise was faulty or just plain stuck with a technique you can’t get the hang of or really don’t like.
A couple of our customers have suggested the modified UFO Class where you bring along your object of dissaffection and get some help, some inspiration or see if you can swap with someone just to clear it out of the cupboard and your way. Our first class will be Saturday September 4th, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm and cost $15. See you there, we’ve got them too.
